Re: Recommendation for custom front rack for a mercedes

There are likely good attachment points for front rack receivers that can be bolted onto your car. I recently bought a Honda Pilot, and wanted the same type of receivers you're talking about. I had no idea where such receivers could be attached, but I figured out how to find out. I Googled "fro...

Re: Come Join MLSR-Lake McClure

"MLSR closest thermal soaring to the Bay." Ted, It's great that McClure is upgrading, and I wish MLSR's well, but your one comment is completely inaccurate. WOR's Mount Diablo is a dynamic thermal soaring site, with many thousands of XC miles logged - and it's right here in our back yard....

Anyone Want to Sell a Falcon 220 or 225? - I got one!

[EDIT] I found a used one at a good price - Thanks, Roy!

I'm looking to increase my glider portfolio, and would love to get a big SS floater. I'm willing to pay the market rate.

Indian Valley Flying

Despite the closing of Tweeten's bailout LZ, there's been plenty of flying in IV this summer. Last weekend, five of us flew, including two pilots on Sport 2's. We all had fun soaring flights, getting over 10k' and soaring over both the ridge and valley. IV is not, and never has been, a site for newb...

Re: Indian Valley Bailout Closed aka Tweetins

I took a few minutes to calculate the glide to the three most popular LZ's in Indian Valley: Meyer's (sometimes called The Woodpile) - 6.8:1 Snow White - 7.6:1 Dave's - 7.8:1 While I wouldn't recommend single-surface gliders attempt to fly out toward the valley on a straight sled-run, intermediate o...

"New" XC Skies Forecast Models - Which Are Most Accurate?

I had a pretty good idea as to which models I used in the previous version of XC Skies. While none of them were perfect, I most often trusteed the GFS model for Diablo and sites further north in California - especially for T/L. The rest of the Bay Area sites seemed to conform closer to NAM models. N...

Re: Indian Valley Bailout Closed aka Tweetins

The tips I posted are an effort to help pilots gain confidence - and actual ability - they can avoid the bailout. Sinking out to Tweeten's has to do with hanging around the launch or ridge area behind Tweeten's, hoping to get up in that area. There can be better soaring in other parts of the ridge, ...

Re: Indian Valley Bailout Closed aka Tweetins

Chris,

I'm glad you had a fun flight. Like most sites, Keddie Ridge has it's sweet spots, and site familiarity helps get you up! I bet Dave took advantage of the house thermal behind his place, which can be the best thermal ride on the whole east side of the ridge.

Re: Indian Valley Bailout Closed aka Tweetins

We knew it was likely, if pilots kept dropping in without permission. At this point, pilots who aren't confident they can make it to the valley LZ's shouldn't launch from the Burn. Maybe we should consider reopening the old Keddie Launch... This time last year, I wrote up some tips for soaring IV. T...
