Board Performance

Postby wind2walk » Thu Jul 24, 2008 12:10 am

Sometimes this board seems to be running slow, taking 15-30 sec to change pages. Other times everything runs smooth and fast.
Is anyone experiencing any performance issues?

What I am seeing is slow performance with the board (sometimes over 20 seconds to load a page) during times of the day when I would expect high internet or server usage (2pm through 10pm). I would expect there are many users on the shared server we host from IPower at this time causing the issue. Not necessarily WOR users but IPower server users, since the server we use is a shared server. I notice the board is slow but I do not see any performance issues with the WOR web site. At other times I usually find the board working fast and the pages are snappy. This leads me to suspect an issue caused by the database or combination of PHP and database access, but it is only a guess. I have sent a request to IPower to look into the issue.

If you find any performance issues please add any details you can to this post.

    - It is always slow or only sometimes
    - What time of the day do you see a performance problem
    - How slow (sec it takes) in displaying a page.
    - What are is it slow in -> Just navigation around viewing pages, searches, posting, etc.
    - Is only the Board slow or is the WOR web site also slow.
    - Any other information you feel that might be help fun.

Thursday - July 31

6:45 to 7:00 AM response time was 70 seconds after most clicks

7:30 to 7:45 AM response time is just a few seconds

I have DSL so expect quick response. Ordinarily I would not have waited around for a 70 second. The past few days, I've just figured the site was down and then gone to a different site. This morning someone interrupted me. By the time I got back, the site had responded. That's when I started timing the responses. Had another long interruption and was pleasantly surprised to see the response time was back to normal now.

We appreciate all the work it takes to maintain the discussion board so I hope this info helps.

It seems like it's a SQL server load problem at iPower that they aren't taking responsibility for. I know phpbb3 well enough that I don't think there's anything in the phpbb3 installation procedure or configuration that can create this kind of effect. If you followed the install.html directions, you did everything right. iPower should try the board themselves until they experience the sluggishness and watch the server's stats until they figure out what's causing it.

Still after two request they still say there is no issue. I'll try another request.
I agree with you it looks like a server mysql issues related to server load.
Nothing to do with the phpBB software or our install.

Hi Wayne,

The BB seems to be a lot faster the last couple of days. Did they finally do something to make it better?

Thanks for putting the effort in.

Sorry but no.
I am still seeing the issues. It all depend when you are on the board and it is very intermittent.
Also I am convinced it is not the phpBB or mySQL database but the host.
I installed the latest Yabb board also and when phpBB is slow so is YaBB. YaBB does not use mySQL, it uses text files for post storage.
You can try this your self. Try running phpBB and YaBB at the same time to verify my results.

This bb is slower than s..t in Nova Scotia in January....

I used to love going to the Yahoo BB... response was quick...
With this new system, I feel like throwing my mouse through the screen, except that would f..k up my own computer system.

WTF is going on with this? Is there a place where we have to insert a quarter?

Indicates to me they are saying what I suspected. Server load and not the applications.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. If you are receiving the "Can't connect to MySQL server on 'wingsofr.ipowermysql.com'" it means that the connection string is not correct in the configuration script. The maximum number of concurrent MySQL connections per user is 10. When you exceed this limit, you will receive the error 'Too many connections'. As your account is on the shared hosting platform, all the resources are shared. If you would like to overcome this issue, you have to sign up for a VPS or dedicated account with us. Could you please let us know the URL where you are receiving the error "Can't connect to MySQL server on 'wingsofr.ipowermysql.com'"?

There are a number of reasons for slowness with any Perl script that is not connecting to the MySQL database. One, sites that are heavily CGI load from our CGI pools. In general, the CGI pools load pages quickly, but on shared hosting, you do encounter situations where another sites poor CGI or exploited CGI can cause the server pool to operate under heavy load. In general, our limits help to prevent any single user (or users) from harming a pool, but it can happen, especially with the preponderance of hackers and exploitable CGI scripts.

We're making CGI improvements every day, and hope to continue to improve the infrastructure, but there will be times when the site may be slow. This is the nature of shared hosting, unfortunately, though we're working on making things more reliable. As of now there are no documents available on this and things are monitored on the regular basis and certain steps will be taken to accomplish this in a timely fashion.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reply through Support Console. We are available 24x7.
