Mentored Owens Trip - Memorial Day w/e

Postby WMichelsen » Tue Apr 02, 2013 10:14 pm

** Edited this post for the 2014 Memorial Day Dates **

I'm planning a trip to the Owens Valley over Memorial Day weekend (probably Fri 5/23 thru 5/26). If you are a H3+, and are interested, stay tuned to this topic. If you have never been to "The Owens", but have thought about it, this might be a good opportunity.

I have flown the Owens a fair bit over the years, and I love it. I would like to introduce more pilots to this amazingly awesome site. So, I'm willing to be a mentor to a group of qualified HG pilots (I don't have any idea how to mentor PG). As a mentor, I'll try to provide my knowledge of the area and flight considerations.

Sometime in early May, I'll have a preparation meeting:
We will do a GoogleEarth survey of the Owens Valley as important to HG pilots.
- launches
- LZs
- accommodations
- land marks
- danger zones
We will go over important preparation information like:
- weather considerations
- flight gear
- chase gear
- ground equipment
- etc
We will discuss what "A Typical Day in the Owens" might be like:
- logistics
- launch windows
- chase/retrieve needs

If this is something you are interested in doing, start securing/gathering the following:
- A vehicle and chase driver (I will *not* be providing either of them)
- Radios (for you and your vehicle)
- GPS (for you)
- GPS and/or Topo Maps (for your vehicle/driver)

If you'd like to go, just to check it out and learn (without flying), let me know. I might still need a chase driver for myself :)

Well, that's a start, for now,
Wayne

** Edited this post for the 2014 Memorial Day Dates **

I am scheduling a planning meeting for Wed. Apt-29 7:30p. (location TBD)
I don't know where, yet. So, if you have access to a good venue, I'd appreciate the offer.
- Big enough for a dozen+ people. (Only a few have signed-up, but in the past, it's been about 12-15)
- Computer projector
- Open Wi-Fi
- OK for food and drinks (hopefully we can order some pizza)

It's Go-Time

I've looked over the forecast data, and based on my impeccable omniscience, I definitively conclude that Friday will be blown out, Saturday is iffy but lighter, and Sunday-Monday will be great. I say that with absolute 3% confidence :)

So, my plan is to depart Friday noon'ish, to fly Sat, Sun, Mon.

I'll be staying somewhere in the Alabama Hills. I'll be at the Totem Cafe Friday morning around 8:15a monitoring 146.460 and (650) twenty triple-7 double-6. See you all there.
