Great Flights

Wayne Michelson went to Colorado Fly Week. It was a great event, with 200 HG and PG pilots participating. Wayne won the open distance contest, dodging some wild weather conditions. One of the sites flown was “Whale”, which at 12500’ is above the timber line. Joey and several other WOR members flew and got some good flights.

Tom Rudolf got a T2C and has been experimenting with the VG.

Sergey flew Slide and McClellan.

Patrick Pannese flew in the Santa Cruz Flats meet and outran a gust front.

Paul Gazis got a 1 ¼ hour flight at a paragliding picnic.

Eric Hinrichs reportedly flew for 3.5 hours at Ed Levin.

President's Report Robert Booth

Vice President’s Report – Patrick Pannese
Patrick will be away on the originally intended date of the flour drop. Phyl Hamby has made sand filled drops for the contest and ranger Brian Christensen has seen them and was favorably impressed. The Flour Drop/Spot Landing contest will be rescheduled at a date TBA. It will need to be scheduled around other events including the McClure Octoberfest. Dan Fleming, the owner of the LZ commonly used at Dunlap, has passed. A memorial is planned.

Flight Director’s Report – Paul Gazis
none

Treasurer's Report – Don Herrick
Expenses slightly exceeded income. The budget for 2017 has been prepared. No dues increase is planned. The club needs a webmaster. Reportedly code has been added to the website to automatically update the meeting dates each month.

Membership Services Report –Phyl Hamby
There are 377 paid members. 11 membership applications are missing waivers. Instructors should send in waivers with new member applications.

Ed Levin Site ReportPhyl Hamby
There were no accidents in the past month, and there were 2 good soaring days.

Mission Ridge Site Report - Chris Valley

Mission Ridge has a new functioning webcam - thank you Evan Cohn and Ron Kellam for spear-heading this effort and making it happen! Just in time for the Mission season!

A $275 donation was made by Chris Valley toward this effort, as well, on behalf of WOR.

Mission Ridge Parking Lot Status:

Did anyone get notification from the Park that there is / was a Board of Directors meeting today at 1PM?

Park Management is recommending Option A to the Board and to certify the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) associated with the project.

Option A was chosen due to cost, environmental concerns, and impact on cultural resources that made Option B the less desirable of the two.

A large turnout is expected at this afternoon's meeting with strong opposition on the proposal from neighboring residents and Ohlone College representatives.

It was also reported at the meeting that permit parking in the neighborhood near the park will be implemented beginning 1 Oct.

Diablo Site Report

It is rumored that Robert Moore has a new wing.

Coyote Lake / Site Acquisition
Ben has been in contact with Paul at the County Parks Dept. The survey/engineering study is still needed. Once that has been accepted, the County requires a fee of $1200. A fee of $160 is required by the Open Space District for access to the upper launch. Access to launch will only be granted once the LZ has been secured.

Goat/Wild Ass – Wayne Michelson

A new gate has been installed on BLM land that complicates access to the Wild Ass launch. The status of that launch is in doubt. The Goat launch is open.

Great Flights

Mission Ridge pilots had a number of good flights in the last month.

President's Report Robert Booth

It was rumored that we would have Ed Levin shut down again due to an expired special use permit. Those rumors are FALSE. Ranger Brian Christianson, had informed me that he was letting our permit expire since he was getting a new head of Special use Permits person, and at that time they would do a full review of our paperwork. That time has come and we have submitted all the information again. We are waiting to hear back from Brian about any updates the park may want us to make. None are expected.

Saftey Saftey Saftey! Rules Rules Rules!! all expect to uphold and enforce them. do not leave this task to the instructors or the club officers. Its ALL of our responsibility.

Phyl Hamby is no longer site committee co-chair.

Mission Ridge Site Report - Chris Valley

Pilots that fly Mission Ridge by now are aware of the weekend parking restrictions - the City of Fremont will not be issuing permits to us as pilots.

With that, we need to rethink our loading and unloading of gear and pilots to help minimize congestion at the Stanford parking area.

Key-holding vehicles should get loaded up prior to arriving at the Stanford parking lot, and non-key holder vehicles can park on Antelope Drive.

Key-holding vehicle can park just inside the LZ entrance gate (two at a time), as well, while signing in and / or loading up gear after flying - please don't block the fire road.

Lastly, a reminder to current and wannabe key holders - Mission key application will commence again on November 1st - watch for an email to current key holders and a post on the WOR bulletin board.

Fly safe, fly far, and fly safe!

See the following link for the parking map:

http://www.fremontpolice.org/DocumentCenter/View/312

Open public parking is available only on Antelope Drive and Vineyard Avenue

Jugdeep noted that PG pilots must walk up over the fields, not over the gate.

Diablo Site Report

Ben reports that the acquisition activities are in progress. There will be a meeting with the Parks Dept on the topic in early November. Also, Ben has ideas for new sites. He will making proposal to the WOR Executive Committee.

CRV is in communication with Park Planners to figure out where the sign-in box will go during (and after) construction - more on that later.

Mission Ridge Site Report - Chris Valley

Pilots can apply for their 2017-18 Mission key now - see top thread on the WOR bulletin board for easy-to-follow directions on how to get a key. As of this report, 13 pilots have applied - 55 keys are issued annually. Remember to provide proof of your 2017 WOR membership renewal.

No recent developments on the Option A parking logistics - more on that later as it develops.

Park Supervisor Gordon Willey has informed WOR pilots that take Uber to the gate on Mill Creek Road are not to climb over the fence or gate - we all need key access to the gate. Pilots that take Uber to the Mill Creek Road gate must be key holders. If you are using Uber to do a retrieve, please fly with your key to avoid climbing over the gate. CRV has sent an email to a large number of PG pilots that have used Uber in the past regarding this matter - please spread the word.

The season is upon us - fly safe!

Diablo Site Report

Coyote Lake / Site Acquisition – Ben dunn

Ben met with Steve Rodrigues, who is a surveyor. The engineering study that has been under discussion is for the purpose of determining what permits are needed and what work needs to be done to open the site. Steve noted that there was a business at the site previously (the Drift Inn bar, according to Jim Woodward) which may eliminate the requirement for an encroachment permit. Steve is researching the situation to determine what is required. Ben proposed forming a new committee and has a tentative list of names of the members.

Mark Mullholland mentioned that Pleasanton Ridge is still a possibility and questioned what progress has been made.
