Goat Rock is coastal ridge soaring site located in the Sonoma Coast State Park. Typical coastal soaring. Altitudes of 400 ft over launch and 700 – 1000 ft at Peaked Hill are common. The record is 3000 ft in shear.

Park Information

  • Restrooms are located in the lower parking lot
  • Parking is available at launch and on the beach at the LZ
  • Cell phones typically do not work at Goat Rock but you can drive a few miles south on Hwy 1 to find signal

Club Rules

  • Be current USHPA and WOR (full or visiting) membership required
  • Follow all park rules and regulations
  • Follow all FAR part 103 operating requirements
  • Fly with a helmet and an emergency parachute
  • Meet all rating requirements
  • Launch only from a designed launch
  • Land only in a designated LZ unless top landing
  • Call 911 in case of an emergency
  • No Commercial activity
  • Report any accidents, incidents or concerns using this form
  • Flying with a cell phone, radio and satellite tracker is recommended

Site Requirements

  • Do not land in or near the water; easy landing, but you may have to land somewhat crosswind – a steep beach with powerful surf and undertow
  • Avoid people on the beach
  • H2s/P2s can only fly the north side, and only with an H4/P4 WOR-member sponsor present
  • Windy cliff launch with strong rotors behind cliff edge
  • Wiremen for hang gliders, usually more than one, are needed in soarable conditions
  • Don’t fly south of Peaked Hill, over Penny Island, or over seals on the sand spit.
  • Don’t land on Goat Rock.
  • Don’t fly low over houses, cars, people or roads.
  • Exercise caution when setting up; strong winds can create turbulent conditions in setup area
  • Beware getting stuck at Peaked Hill at the southern end by increasing winds
  • Avoid the Goat Rock rotor turbulence downwind to the south
  • Mini wings are allowed and have the same guidelines as full size paragliders
  • Speed wings are not allowed.

Winds: SW-NW

HG: 0-25mph, ideal 15mph

PG: 0-18mpg, ideal 12mph

  • Arch View is a cliff launch next to Sundowner Lookout parking lot, ~150′ above the beach

Landing Zone (LZ)

  • The Primary LZ is on the beach just below launch or to the south below the Blind Beach parking lot
  • The Secondary LZ is launch; top landing

Weather Information

  • Typically flyable January through May.  Many summer evenings work for paragliders
  • When flying, be aware that winds may pick up quickly, and it can become blown out.  This is especially true for paragliders. Winds can increase with altitude quickly
